About Karl Avdek

I have been involved in athletic competition my entire life. I grew up in the horse business and was paid to train horses professionally by the time I was fifteen. As an athlete, I have competed in both team and individual sports at an extremely high level. I have coached three sports at the collegiate level, worked with professionals, performed clinics internationally, produced a nationally distributed instructional video series and have degrees and certifications from here until next week but most importantly as both a performer and as an instructor, I know both ends of the spectrum; what it is like not just to win but to lose; to be a star … and to be star … ving; to be on top of my game; confident and expectant of great results and also what it is like to be “down and out”; miserable and “perceived” by coaches and competitors as a “loser”; constantly anticipating bad and even disastrous results … often despite huge amounts of hard work and planning. As a top and highly recruited high school athlete I was poised minimally for a successful college career when I was severely injured the third day of practice in my junior year. Not surprisingly all the scholarship offers vanished. I ended up washing dishes 40 hours a week during my entire senior year of high school and working a full time job in a foundry while taking a full load of courses during

my freshman year in college.  I did not, however, give up; either physically or mentally. Driven by my love of sport, I slowly I came back and ended up competing in three sports in college and eventually walking on to a DI school and being offered a scholarship. The road back took over three years. I was eventually offered professional contracts in two sports but much much more importantly I learned that all of these experiences had actually enriched me and enabled me to help others as I have since gone on not only to teach and consult but to help individuals and animals in need through rewarding charity work. I have coached and worked with team sport and equine sport athletes at every end of the competitive spectrum; from youth through the collegiate and professional ranks. I have been a college professor. I have lectured and demonstrated horsemanship clinics both nationally and abroad. I have been written up in regional and national periodicals, been interviewed on national media. I have successfully taken students to national competitions … and won. I have worked with Olympic level athletes. I have produced an information DVD and website, consulted with innumerable competitors and helped them through their issues in order to find their own competitive edge and reach their goals. The mental, spiritual, and emotional rewards of this work are enormous; incredible.I know what it is like to be “up and on top of your game” but also what it is to be “down” AND “out”.What EVER you are going through .. I have been there many many many times … and ways .. and can help you find YOUR way.
